Imagine the ability to control exposure based on the pixel rather then a portion of an image, this is exactly what Canon is attempting to do with their new patent.  By being able to control the exposure value of individual pixels, you will be able to drastically improve the dynamic range of a photo without having to use exposure bracketing.

An image that was included in Canon's new patent.

In my opinion I imagine a technology like this would be very similar to exposure blending, rather than HDR.  I am curious to see how people would react to a camera with this technology.  I know so many HDR photographers, who enjoy the tone mapping process, I can't imagine that they would give up that creative freedom for a camera that did it for them.

Ideally this technology would be perfect if you could control and manipulate the effect.  This would allow HDR photographers to maintain their creativity, yet have the convenience of not needing to bracket their photos.
